| The 2008 Legislature directed the Institute to analyze truancy prevention and intervention programs in Washington and other states, including the following study components: reviewing the research literature; surveying Washington school district and court programs and policies; estimating district and court expenditures for compliance with truancy laws; and evaluating the academic impacts of truancy laws in Washington State. Truancy petitions and their costs to districts were analyzed in a February 2009 report. Other reports scheduled for 2009 examine 1) evidence-based truancy and dropout programs, 2) truancy and dropout programs used in Washington State, 3) court practices and expenditures related to truancy petitions, and 4) academic and crime outcomes associated with truancy petitions.
